Govt to import 0.15m tonnes of fertiliser to make buffer stock
10/24/2005

The government will import 0.15 million tonnes of urea fertiliser to create a buffer stock to meet domestic demand in time of crisis, reports UNB.
The Cabinet Purchase Committee at a meeting in the city Sunday approved a proposal of the Industries Ministry to import the fertiliser.
Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman, who presided over the meeting, told reporters that the government has decided to make this import to face any shortfall in fertiliser supply.
He, however, said the coun try has enough stock of fertiliser to meet the demand. "But we'll import this fertiliser as a precautionary measure to face any scarcity," he said.
The Industries Ministry placed the proposal to the Cabinet Committee as it felt that the ongoing gas crisis might disrupt fertiliser production, which would lead to a crisis in supply of the agri-input.
The Cabinet Committee also gave a nod to a proposal of the Power Ministry to renovate three units of the Haripur Power Plant.
Industries Minister Matiur Rahman Nizami, LGRD Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, State Minister for Power Iqbal Hassan Mahmood and other members of the committee were present at the meeting.
