Bhatti gives his artistes precious onions
10/24/2005

CHANDIGARH, Oct 23 (PTI): The spiralling onion prices in India may have made the commodity out of bounds for some households, but for famous satirist Jaspal Bhatti it is just the right time to buy them.
Bhatti on Saturday completed shooting of his comedy film "Jija Ji" and instead of paying his artistes in cash, the comedy king gave them bags containing onions.
And the artistes are not complaining.
Gurpreet Ghuggi, a well-known Punjabi comedian who acted in the film, thanked Bhatti for the "unique gesture" and said after the ten-day shooting schedule he would return home with plenty of onions and "my wife will warmly welcome me".
Holding a mock show here to protest increase in the price onions which were selling at around Rs 25 per kg in the city in the retail market, Bhatti said "onions are a precious commodity these days".
"An ordinary man who toils hard to make his both ends meet relishes onion with his bread. With steep increase in its prices, onions too will become luxury for an ordinary man," Bhatti said.
Bhatti's wife Savita said some households had already begun to feel the pinch and many were unable to afford onions at current prices.
