TCB to revamp its open sales operation
FE Report
10/24/2005

The commerce ministry has decided to appoint 450 dealers in addition to the existing 150 to run the sales operation of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) in the capital city.
It has also decided not to rely on Ansars and Village Defence Party (VDP) to run the TCB sales operation following high operation cost charged by their personnel, sources said.
The Ansars and VDP demanded Tk 2.5 million as operational cost of the TCB sales programme in 30 places of the city since the beginning of the Ramadan, they added.
Commerce Ministry advisor Barkatullah Bulu said the appointment of additional dealers has been taken to beef up the sales operation.
To a query, he, however, refused to comment on the charge demanded by Ansars and VDP.
Though the high charge demanded by the Ansars and VDP seems to have forced the commerce ministry to appoint more dealers, experts said such a move will jeopardise the sales operation.
The TCB sales operation that started with the aim of brining down the skyrocketing prices of daily necessities has failed to serve the purpose.
The price of onion made a sharp rise in the local market though the TCB is selling of onion at the rate of Tk 22 per kilogram as part of its sales programme.
The appointment of additional dealers to the sales operation excluding the participation of the Ansars and VDP might make the success of TCB programme more doubtful, the experts added.
