ECNEC approves 14 dev projects worth Tk 33.14b

          The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved Sunday as many as 14 new development projects worth Tk 33.14 billion.
The projects will be implemented through external and internal sources. Six projects worth Tk 11.00 billion will be taken from external sources as project aid while the remaining Tk 22.14 will be shouldered by the government.
Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who is also the ECNEC chairperson, presided over it at the NEC conference room of the Planning Commission (PC) in the city.
After the meeting, Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman told newsmen that they had undertaken a project, which would help convert education institutions into school-cum-flood shelters.
He also said that a project to renovate electricity distribution network of DESCO was approved. He admitted that systems loss increased due to the lack of such a network system.
Reduction of Child labour engaged in risky occupations in Bangladesh (Phase- II) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment approved it and it will cost at Tk 290.165 million.
Flood Rehabilitation project for secondary and higher secondary educational institutions under the Education Ministry worth of Taka 1.5 billion was also approved.
Constriction and expansion of new grid sub-station with transmission facilities worth Tk 5.994 billion, Shunt Compensation at Grid Sub Station by Capacitors Backs (Phase-1) worth Tk 1.134 billion and Strengthening Electric Distribution Network Project of DESCO worth Tk 2.88 billion under Power Division were also passed.
A project tilled Solid Waste Management in Dhaka City (Landfills improvement at Matuail) project worth Tk 468.37 million and another project on rural infrastructure Development worth Tk 9.95 billion under the local government division also got the approval.
Chatmohor-Handial-Hamkudia road development project of Tk 343.0 million under the communications ministry was approved at the meeting as well.
The ECNEC also gave its nod to the project on bridge/culvert construction up to 12 metres in rural areas worth Tk 1.38 billion, under food and disaster management ministry.
It also passed Upazilla Livestock Development Centre (ULDC) worth Tk 447.8 million under fisheries and livestock ministry.
Projects under Water Resources Ministry were South Comilla-North Noakhali integrated drainage and irrigation project worth Tk 2.985 billion, deep tube wells installation project worth Tk 1.47 billion in Thakurgaon (Unit-II) and Char Development and Settlement Project-III worth Tk 1.308 billion were also passed in the ECNEC meeting.
The meeting also approved primary education rehabilitation project for the 2004 flood worth Tk 2.99 billion under primary and mass education ministry.
Finance and Planning Minister M Saifur Rahman, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Health and Family Planning Minister Khondker Mosharrof Hossain, Industries Minister Motiur Rahman Nizami, Communications Minister Nazmul Huda, Food and Disaster Management Minister Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yousuf, Agriculture Minister MK Anwar, Fisheries and Livesortok Minister Abdullah Al Noman, Post and Telecommunications Minister Md Aminul Hoque, Water Resources Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Education Minister M Osman Farruk, State Minister for Labour and Employment Aman Ullah Aman and State Minister for Power Iqbal Hasan Mahmud attended it.
Apart from the ministers, cabinet secretary, principal secretary to the prime minister, secretary and PC members, secretaries of concerned ministries and high officials joined it.
