SIRAJGANJ, Oct 23 (BDNEWS): Rail communications between the capital and North Bengal has snapped following submerging of rail tracks near Bhangura station on Sirajganj-Ishwardi route. Sources said movement of all inter-city, express and local trains stopped from Saturday noon when about 200 metres of the tracks between the Guakhara and Bhangura stations went under water following incessant rain for the last couple of days. Mostafa-e-Jamil, director of Public relations of the Bangladesh Railway, told the news agency that this was a chronic problem every year with different points of the route submerging because the 'black cotton soil' beneath the track gets soft after absorbing large quantities of rainwater. "Communications might resume by Monday afternoon as railway engineers are trying to repair the damaged tracks with sandbags and stones," he said. "However, transhipment of the passengers is going on from the both sides of the damaged point." It was reported that thousands of passengers stranded at different stations during this holy month of Ramadan continued to suffer acute misery. Senior railway official of the western region Habibul Haq told the news agency that the repair work was being further disrupted due to the current inclement weather.
