They say five actors namely Poppy, Afzal Sharif, Misha Saudagor, Mehedi and Jhumka may soon have to face the law for doing obscene scenes in "Bostir Rani Suriya" (Mother Slum Queen Suriya) along with the producer, director, cameraman, dance director and editor of the film. The information ministry has asked the deputy commissioner of Satkhira to begin proceedings against the abovementioned gang of nine. The censor certificate of the film has also been temporarily cancelled. This is the second time the film lost its censor certificate. Mote on this later.
The government has taken a tough stand against obscene footage commonly called "cut-piece". A number of films in the recent past got permanently banned and the prints of all were confiscated wherever found. Also, many cinema halls have been barred from exhibiting English films.
Also, the age-old and easily-bent weak censor policies were being overhauled and new ones introduced just as the existing parameters for judging what we can and cannot see were being readjusted so that lewdness and obscenity can no longer so very easily slip through the various loopholes commonly termed "fuck-fockor" in the existing censor laws.
In addition, FDC authorities have been directed to remain extremely vigilant so that from the shooting to the finished product, no filmmaker got away with mischief. Many say it is possible to control much of the lewdness and obscenity because much of the films are shot at the FDC. In addition, FDC also lease out cameras. Most of the films also end up at the FDC labs after being shot. However, extremists among the prude brigade say lewdness and obscenity cannot be stopped with niceties like brand new rules and regulations and moral lectures but by pragmatic step like stripping naked and whipping of the errant director, producer, exhibitor, even projectionist of the various cinema halls after which they should paraded on the city streets. They also said that after this, they should not only be barred from taking part in the making and exhibition of films but forced to sell vegetables at a specially designated spot near the FDC gates in Tejgaon. When asked why particularly there, those dangerously irate people said they were not at liberty to tell confiding that at that point in time they didn't know the answer to that one, that it just came to their head and they said it, so help them heaven). Some among these very angry and extremely unstable people pointed out that some directors are simply bad filmmakers and demanded they be banished from the land for giving our films a bad and mad name. That sounds a bit harsh. However it is not always a case of obscenity this time but the absence of it that actually gets some exhibitors into trouble. Sometimes irate fans turn into a furious mob when they discover that what was advertised in the posters were missing in the film proper; there were reports of incensed crowds attacking cinema halls and tried to burn down at least two when the, ah, er, extraordinary images in the hoardings that lured them in would only be shown in their dreams.
"Shalar betader kam deksen ni? Biggapona ar postaray oishob, maini oishob betara bhoira disay! Aar odi deikha amgo shobdir matha mainnay gorom hoiya gesilo ga! Ar poisha dia ticket kaitta giya dehi, oishob kissu nai to nai, bedi-go khali mathae ghoomta deya baki assil! Poisha to as feroth dibo-na shalara,, toy oishob dekhailoi na ka?!"
Many think these fans also deserve a bit of sympathy actually. It is a strange world that we live in.
