Traders importing camels from India ahead of Eid Our Correspondent 1/11/2005
RAJSHAHI, Jan 10: A large number of Indian camels are being imported through different bordering areas of Rajshahi district ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Azha, sources said. According to the sources, in addition to hundreds of cattle and buffaloes, more than 60 camels were imported so far through Charghat and Sultanganj corridors during the last few days. A number of cattle traders from Dhaka and Chittagong are importing such camels from India, the sources added. The customs authority is realising Tk 6,250 against every camel as the customs duty, they said. Abu Sayed, a cattle trader at Charghat corridor, told this correspondent that he had already sent 14 camels to Dhaka by two trucks. "Due to high customs duty and low demand for camels in the local market, I am not sending any more camel to Dhaka," he said. On the other hand, he expressed the hope that within a couple of days trading in sacrificial animals in Dhaka would heat up and the animals would fetch satisfactory prices. Sources at Damkura Hat, the largest cattle market of the district, told this correspondent that several camels were brought to the market for sale but none bought those for their exorbitant prices. The price of a camel is being charged at Tk 50,000-Tk 60,000, they informed.
