DU web-site not updated
Md Kamruzzaman
5/5/2004

The six-year-old Dhaka University (DU) official web-site is causing embarrassment to users as silly spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, incoherent sentences and outdated information are found on it.
The Central Library Automation Project of the university launched the website in 1998 but the web page was not updated with the latest information.
At present, the university has 50 departments while some new departments are likely to be launched. But the web-site records say that there are 42 departments in the university.
There are 17 male and female dormitories in the university but the web site contains the name of only 13 dormitories.
Besides, in the web-site, there is no mention about the Teacher- Student Centre (TSC), one of the busiest centres of the activities of the university.
Furthermore, there is no information on the admission procedures of foreign students in the web-site.
The department of Bangla of the university has been presented as 'Department of Bangali' in the web page while the name of Dr Muhammad Shahidullah is written as 'Shhidullah'.
There are also many incoherent sentences in the web page. For example, "The Department of English of the University of Dhaka……….".
DU Treasurer Syed Rashedul Hasan said at a meeting in 2003, university authorities decided to hand over the charge of the website to the Institute of Information Technology (IIT) of the university from January 1, 2004, but for some reasons the decision was yet to be implemented.
The Central Library Automation Project in-charge Khandakar Fazlur Rahman said that the website was supposed to be supervised by the IIT, but the institute was yet to take over the responsibility.
He, however, said that the mistakes in the web site would be corrected immediately and information would be upgraded.
Professor of Information Technology Institute Kazi Muhaimin suggested the authorities to form a separate IT division to supervise the website.
He proposed to appoint a teacher from the IIT to supervise the website regularly.
