Seed crisis hampers wheat cultivation in Netrakona

11/23/2005

NETRAKONA, Nov 22 (UNB): Wheat cultivation in the district may be hampered this season due to acute shortage of seeds.
Farmers said production of wheat was not satisfactory last season due to unfavourable weather in the district and that was why the farmers failed to collect seeds for this season.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, a scheme has been taken up to bring 650 hectares of land under wheat cultivation this season in 10 upazilas of the district.
The upazilas are Sadar, Atpara, Mohanganj, Madan, Kendua, Purbadhala, Durgapur, Kalmakanda, Barhatta and Khaliajuri.
Some 125 kg of seeds will be needed for achieving the cultivation target, the sources said.
When contacted, farmers said they are preparing their land for wheat cultivation but seed crisis is shattering all their hopes.
Wheat growers are gathering at the Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) for seeds every day but are returning home empty handed.
In this situation, the farmers are apprehending that they may not achieve the cultivation target if arrangements are not taken by the authority concerned to ensure adequate supply of seed immediately.
