JS titbits PM greeted for her election as SAARC chairperson

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was felicitated on the inaugural day of the 19th session of the Jatiya Sangsad Sunday for her election as the SAARC Chairperson, reports BSS. The legislators also praised the Prime Minister in an unequivocal term for her dynamic leadership in successfully holding the 13th SAARC summit in the capital. At the very outset of the day's proceedings, Speaker Muhammad Jamir Uddin Sircar congratulated Khaleda Zia for successful completion of the much-awaited 13th SAARC summit and her election for the second term the chairperson of this seven-nation organisation. The Speaker said annexation of membership to Afghanistan and observer status to China and Japan had indicated that the SAARC had been able to generate interests and enthusiasm among the Asian nations about the SAARC.
Five-member JS panel of chairmen nominated
Speaker Muhammad Jamir Uddin Sircar nominated a five-member panel of chairmen for the 19th session of the eighth Jatiya Sangsad, reports BSS. The members of the panel are: Ziaur Rahman Khan, Joynal Abedin Faruque, Shah Mohammad Ruhul Quddus, GM Fazlul Huq and Mohammad Faruque Khan. As per the Rules of Procedure, the Speaker announced the nomination in the House at the commencement of the session and arranged their names in an order of precedence. In the absence of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, the person whose name remains on the top of the panel from amongst those present at the sitting shall take the chair.
Tk 648.6m afforestation programme undertaken
The government has undertaken an afforestation programme of about Tk 648.60 million (64.86 crore) in the current financial year, said Environment and Forests Minister Tariqul Islam in the Jatiya Sangsad Sunday, reports BSS. Responding to a question raised by Mohammad Abdul Mottalib Akond (Gaibandha-4), the minister said the programmes involves Tk 40.30 million to be provided by the revenue sector while Tk 60,82,82,500 to be provided by the development sector. Elaborating the objectives of the programme, the minister said this programme would play an important role in alleviating rural poverty through creating huge employment opportunities in the social afforestation sector. Tariqul Islam said a total of 9.30 million coconut saplings out of 10 million were so far planted along the coastal belts of the country's 26 districts. The rest of the coconut saplings would be planted within the current fiscal year, he added.
JS adopts obituary reference
The Jatiya Sangsad on the first day of its 19th session Sunday adopted an obituary reference on the death of Indian President KR Narayanan, a former minister, a former legislator, two senior sub-judges and a journalist, reports BSS. The deceased are: former minister and journalist Enayetullah Khan, former MLA Syed Sirajul Islam, senior sub-judges Sohel Ahmed and Jagannath Parey and journalist Goutam Das of the daily Samakal. Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar moved the obituary Reference, which was adopted by the House unanimously.
