RANGPUR, Oct 22: The cultivation of peanuts is gradually becoming popular among farmers of the shoal areas of the river Teesta under Rangpur district.
During the current season, peanut has been cultivated on 18,000 thousand acres of land and the farmers are eagerly looking for a profitable production, sources said.
An official source of the District Agriculture Extension Department (DAED) said the sandy soil and climate of the region are favourable for peanut cultivation during the months of Poush to Jaistho and Shrabon to Agrahayon.
Peanut can be cultivated in both summer and winter as the temperature does not hamper its cultivation, and it needs slight irrigation for a short period, the sources added.
A number of farmers of the region told the FE that they hope to change their financial condition by large-scale cultivation of peanuts on their lands this season.
Meanwhile, many of them could not grow peanuts due to shortage of seeds and various financial problems.
The farmers also claimed they had to face harassment, irregularities and sometime have to offer bribes to the officials for taking loan from the RAKUB's upazila branch.
