Sugarcane growers, workers demand re-opening of Rangpur Sugar Mills Our Correspondent 10/14/2005
RANGPUR Oct, 13: Thousands of sugarcane growers and workers of the closed Rangpur Sugar Mills formed a two kilometre long human chain on the Gobindaganj-Mahimaganj road in Gaibandha recently demanding re-opening of Rangpur Sugar Mills, sources said. The demonstrators also held a protest rally on the factory premises. Mahimaganj Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Latif presided over the rally. The rally was also addressed, among others, by Jinnat Ali Prodhan, Delwar Hossain and Abdur Rashid Khan. They said the closure of Rangpur Sugar Mills was a vicious conspiracy and demanded its reopening through the government intervention. The speakers also said that many sugar mills were still running despite huge financial loss. They vowed to launch severe agitations to realise their demand as a separate course of actions.
