Oil tanker collision with dredger may affect work

10/13/2005

JHALKATHI, Oct. 12 (UNB): A fuel oil tanker collided Tuesday night with a dredger of the Water Development Board, which was engaged in digging the Gabkhan Channel at Sarengal of the district.
The accident caused a damage of at least Tk 2.0 million (20 lakh) to the dredger and might halt the digging of Gabkhan Channel for six months, according to an initial estimate.
The police seized the oil tanker (T-1069) and arrested its master Ratneswar Roy (48).
There was no casualty from the accident that occurred at 9:15pm Tuesday, the police said.
The master of the oil tanker claimed that the dredger was digging in the middle of the channel. He could not control the tanker vessel for lack of adequate water in the Channel at the time.
The accident occurred when the Chittagong-bound tanker was crossing the Gabkhan Channel after the delivery of the fuel.
The workers of the dredger used the tugboat as barricade to detain the tanker vessel when it tried to flee the spot after the accident. Later, they informed the police.
Master of the affected ST Nabaganga dredger, Zahirul Islam, has filed a case with police in connection with the accident.
A cargo vessel, MV Trisha-1, which capsized in the Gabkhan Channel on March 10 this year after it was hit by a tanker, is yet to be salvaged.
