Lankan electricity union threatens to pull the plug

COLOMBO, Apr 6 (AFP): Sri Lanka's electricity workers warned Wednesday of a nationwide power blackout unless the government withdraws its plans to restructure the loss-making state utility.
The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Union said it was opposed to breaking up the utility into several smaller companies ahead of privatisation but supported the idea of "real restructuring" to recoup the losses.
The country was Monday hit by a 90-minute all-island power outage which the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), ruling out sabotage, blamed on lightning striking two high tension electricity transmitting cables.
The union did not say when it would take strike action but said it was up to the government to withdraw its restructuring plan.
