Conspiracy on to turn Bangladesh into a satellite state: PM

2/20/2006

TAJUMUDDIN, (Bhola), Feb 19 (UNB): Prime Minister Khaleda Zia Sunday forewarned the people that Bangladesh would be turned into a satellite state if her opponents returned to power. She alleged that there was an ongoing conspiracy to cripple the nation and its economy forever.
"They are still engaged in the same conspiracy-- if they could come to power, the country will become a vassal state making the people subservient and the economy ruined," she told a public meeting at Tajumuddin Dakbunglow ground.
Terming the upcoming general elections "extremely important," the Prime Minister said the elections in 2007 would determine whether Bangladesh would remain an independent, self-reliant nation or a subservient one.
Khaleda called on the people to take their decision judiciously in the next elections as they did in 2001 electing BNP and the alliance to power for overall development of the country against the politics of godfathers, terrorism and undemocratic rule.
"Cast your vote in favour of the roadmap of development initiated by the BNP-led alliance," she said. If the alliance gets opportunity for another five years, the country would change radically through development and economic advance, she added.
Without naming Awami League, Khaleda said that a party has resorted to destructive politics and damaging public property by enforcing unnecessary hartal by sidetracking parliament at a time when foreign investments are pouring in and development works continuing in a full swing.
"This is a sheer conspiracy against the nation, and a political party is engaged in it," she told the rally.
Presided over by Tajumuddin Upazila BNP president Hafizur Rahman, the rally was also addressed, among others, by Water Resources Minister Hafizuddin Ahmed, Post and Telecommunications Minister Aminul Huq and PM's political secretary Harris Chowdhury.
Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated a 250-line digital exchange with Internet facility.
