Govt bans entry of SS Norway

The government decided to follow the WTO, the ILO and the Basel Convention in importing ship SS Norway crammed with asbestos, a harmful substance for the human body. The decision came at an emergency inter-ministerial meeting at the conference room of the Environment and Forest Ministry Wednesday. The meeting, presided over by Jafar Ahmed Chowdhury, secretary of Environment and Forest Ministry, was attended by high officials of home, commerce, and industries ministries, Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) and representatives of Ship Breakers' Association. It decided to prevent the import of SS Norway by not allowing opening any LC with the Bangladesh Bank (BB) in this regard, directing the CPA and the Coast Guard Authorities not to let the ship enter Bangladesh and take steps as per the ladesh Environment Act, WTO, ILO and Basel Convention. — BDNEWS
