Prime Minister Khaleda Zia firmly said those responsible for any injudicious activities would be dealt with a strong hand, assuring that her government is working confidently to maintain peace and security in all spheres of society, reports UNB. The Prime Minister made the statement while she was speaking at the National Conference-2006 of the Council for Interfaith Harmony, Bangladesh (CIH, BD) at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the city Wednesday. Council for Interfaith Harmony, Bangladesh (CIH, BD) Chairman Shah Abdul Hannan presided over the function. State Minister for Religious Affairs Mosharref Hossain Shajahan, of Khatib Baitul Mukkaram Mosque Moulana Obaidul Huq, Sangharaj Dharma Sen Mohathero, Kantibandhu Brammanchari, Archbishop Paulanius Costa, Sudhananada Mohathero, President of Bangladesh Bouddha Kristi Prochar Sangha, CIH, BD presidium members Paresh Chandra Mandal, Sukomol Barua, Tapan D Rojario and Secretary General Moulana Abul Kalam Azad also spoke on the occasion. The Prime Minister urged the country's religious leaders to play an ever-vigilant role in maintaining communal harmony in the country, saying that the government will remain with them in any noble endeavour. Khaleda Zia said: "Bangladesh will move forward with firm steps in its journey of peace by joining the international caravan against sedition and terrorism. We consider our duty towards our citizens as our holy trust. There is no scope for backtracking on this responsibility." She hoped that the Council for Interfaith Harmony would soon become a unifying platform for all religious communities of the country. "Please use this organisation as an excellent opportunity for knowing and understanding yourselves and for coming closer to each other," she noted.
