No alternative but to excel in IT to survive: President
2/3/2006
SAVAR, Feb 2 (BDNEWS): The entire world has now turned into a 'global village' with the development of information technology and there is no alternative but to be the part of it and to have necessary expertise for survival. President Iajuddin Ahmed said this in his presidential speech at the 3rd convocation of the Jahangirnagar University (JU) Thursday. The President, also the Chancellor of the university said, "We have to achieve international standard if we want to succeed in world competition and to attain the goal. The role of educational institutions especially the role of university is significant." Some people can take real education from the university while others are deprived of it. If the level of perception is not sharpened the bookish knowledge becomes merely the means of obtaining certificates, he added. The convocation, in literal sense, stands for 'ending one's education up to a certain level' in an institution but in the real sense of the word it opens the floodgates of greater education, he said. The convocation was held on the central playground of the university at 11 am. Education Minister M Osman Farruk and Vice-chancellor Khandaker Mustahidur Rahman, among others, spoke on the occasion. Former Chief Justice Mostafa Kamal delivered the 'convocation speech' in the function. The former chief justice said sending education into exile, be it religious or scientific education, is nothing but a sort of fascist attitude, which has no relation at all with freethinking, he noted. A total of 2,800 postgraduates and graduates received 4,350 certificates at the convocation. Ten students were awarded president's gold medals for their outstanding academic performance.
