Communication ministry plants 6.1m saplings in three years

The Ministry of Communication planted over 6.1 million trees in the last three years and it is now planning to plant millions more, reports BSS.
Ministry sources said the government was implementing the massive programme to add more green to the traditional landscape of Bangladesh along with protecting the environment and slashing poverty.
As part of the programme, the Bangladesh Railway (BR) has decided to plant 40,000 saplings of different species on its open spaces at different stations across the country in the current 2004-05 financial year to make pollution-free Bangladesh.
The BR planted over 102,701 saplings of herbal, fruit bearing and valuable timber trees in the last three years.
The Ministry has undertaken various steps and programmes to develop environment and pollution-free Bangladesh by planting different kinds of saplings on both sides of roads and highways and open spaces of different departments under the ministry.
A total of 6,150,282 saplings of different species were planted in the last three years on 2,911 kilometres on both sides of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and open spaces of different departments of the Ministry at a cost of about Tk 180 million(18 crore).
The Ministry expressed the hope that the programmes would play an important role in alleviating poverty by creating job opportunities and producing most valuable timber in the country.
Besides, different departments of the ministry, four NGOS also planted 149,018 saplings on the both sides of the Jamuna bridge and distributed over 50,000 saplings among the erosion-hit people across the river Jamuna.
