Opposing panels reach consensus on BGMEA leadership

Leaders of three groups contesting in the upcoming election of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) announced Saturday sharing the trade body's leadership on consensus.
They promised that they would work unitedly for the betterment of the trade body that represents the country's highest contributor to export earning.
"We have reached a consensus on leadership of the association," said BGMEA president Annisul Huq.
Annis, also leader of the `Forum', a group of contestants in the election scheduled for to held on February 17, Tipu Munshi, leader of the Sammilita Parishad and Fazlul Haque leader of another faction of Sammilita Parishad addressed a joint press conference at a city hotel.
Officials of the BGMEA said three groups agreed that they would share the leadership of the association.
The two-year term would be divided equally and each group would have a tenure of eight months, officials said.
But in the 27-member executive body, Annis's Forum will get 12 posts of directors, Munshi's Parishad 10 posts and Haque's Parishad get five posts.
Answering queries, Tipu Munshi said the garment industry owners have forced them to reach a consensus.
"We want a strong BGMEA to face emerging global market challenges and we have decided to be united," said Fazlul Haque.
In the press conference, Annisul Huq told that no name was dropped from the BGMEA voters' list intentionally. "Those who did not pay subscriptions, automatically, lost their memberships."
This year 2275 members are expected to cast their votes, said Annis. In last election BGMEA had 2119 voters, he said.
