Anti-drug drives being disrupted for DCC commissioners, police

Directives of the Home Ministry to end illegal drug trade are not being carried out by anti-narcotics officials due to interventions by local influential people and a section of police personnel, reports BDNEWS. The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) sent a letter to the Home Ministry, a copy of which was obtained by the news agency, by August-end mentioning that Salahuddin Lavlu, a commissioner of the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) has been patronising illegal drug trade at the Gopibagh area in the city, causing serious damage to the government's drive, officials told the news agency. "We were stunned to see 123 incoming calls to a mobile phone of a notorious drug peddler from police personnel of different designations in 48 hours," a senior official of DNC said requesting anonymity. They said Dhaka Metro Sub-Zone of the DNC sent several reports to its director general and to the Ministry of Home Affairs, mentioning involvement of local influential person, including DCC commissioners in the illegal drug trade at different spots in the city. Based on the informations of different intelligence offices, officials said DNC start ed frequent operations at the identified spots, such as Munshirtek (Buddin's spot), Nilkhet Slum (Babul's spot), Narinda Tempo Colony, Mohammadpur Sweeper Colony, Nayabazar, Anandabazar, Sutrapur Sweeper Colony, Agargaon BNP Slum, Tejgaon 7-storeyed Slum, City Palli in Demra and Gopibagh Titipapa (Nasir's spot). "Although we were able to limit sale of illegal drugs at many of the spots, we failed totally to control it at Gopibagh Titipapa (Nasir's spot) because of unwanted intervention, including from a DCC Commissioner," admitted Abdullah-Al-Baki, deputy director of DNC, Dhaka Metro Sub-Zone.
