Work of third Karnaphuli bridge to start next Jan FE Report 12/26/2005
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdullah Al Noman said that work of the much-hyped third Karnaphuli bridge will begin January next, brushing aside all speculations about it. "I will not compete in the ninth parliamentary elections, if the construction work of the bridge does not begin shortly," he confidently said. He was addressing a discussion meeting as chief guest at the Chittagong Festival and traditional 'Mejban' in the city. Chittagong Samity, Dhaka Sunday organised it. Speakers alleged that though more than four years have elapsed since the ruling government took charge, this vital project has still remained unimplemented despite the fact that the first cabinet meeting approved the project. Noman also said that Kuwait government assured the government on funding this project. President of Chittagong Samilty, Dhaka Md Jahangir Alam Khan chaired the discussion, while State Minister for Forest and Environment Jafrul Islam Chowdhury attended it as a special guest. Among others, working of president of Jatiya Samajtanrik Dal Moinuddin Khan Badal, Absar Uddin, Mohammed Nurul Alam, Jafar Ullah, and actress Kabori Sarwar spoke on the occasion. Earlier, Chittagong festival 2005 began and traditional Mejban began from 9am in a festive mood at city's Women Sports Complex that continued until late afternoon amid tight security. Around 10,000 Chittagonias out of nearly 50,000 living in the capital thronged the complex to celebrate the annual re-union. Mejban, which traditionally entertains guests with a menu of spicy beef and plain rice, started at 11am and continued till 3pm. Sources said that 140 cows and 14 goats were slaughtered on this occasion apart from large number of poultry birds and fishes. Abul Mia, a famous chef in the city cooked the food. Chittagong Samity also awarded the Chittagong Samity Medal-2006 to four eminent personalities for their outstanding contributions in the various fields including social work, healthcare and so on. Ashab Uddin (posthumous) was awarded for social work, Jafrullah Chowdhury for healthcare, Kabori Sarwar for performing arts and Abdul Karim was given award for his contribution to history. The programme ended with a cultural soiree, which was performed by eminent artistes.
