New US envoy arrives in city



New US Ambassador to Bangladesh Henry K Thomas Jr arrived in city Monday to assume his new duties. Thomas, the 11th US Ambassador to Bangladesh, arrived here from Washington, D.C., where he was taking introductory Bangla language lessons at the Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute in preparation for his assignment in Bangladesh. He arrived here with his daughter, Casey Merie Eunice Thomas, and will be joined shortly by his wife Ericka O Smith Thomas, a vocalist. A news release of the American Center said Thomas served as Director for South Asia at the National Security Council, the White House from 2001-2002. He joined the Foreign Service in 1984 and has served in New Delhi, Harare, Zimbabwe, Kaduna, Nigeria and Peru. - UNB

Two-day Pak date exhibition begins in city



A two-day exhibition of Pakistani dates began at the Purbani Hotel in city Monday. The Export Promotion Bureau of Pakistan in cooperation with the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka is organising the exhibition formally inaugurated by Pakistan High Commissioner in Dhaka Iqbal Ahmed Khan. Seven Pakistani dates exporting companies -- Al Shahbaz Traders, Noble Impex, Supreme International, Prime Date Products, Shah and Company, Sindh Date Growers Association and Growers District Khairpur Mirs--are participating in the exhibition. At least 20 high and improved quality date products including jam, pickles and syrup are being displayed at the exhibition. - FE Report

Train link thru'' JMB opens tomorrow



RAJSHAHI, Aug 11: The stage is set to open the long-cherished direct railway link between Rajshahi and Joydevpur through the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge (JMB) from August 14, officials said Monday. Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is expected to inaugurate the inter-city train service at a function to be held at the Rajshahi Railway Station on the same day. The Prime Minister, along with some cabinet members, MPs, high officials, staff and employees of the Railway Department and the government organisations, is likely to travel by the train ''Silk City'' from the Rajshahi Railway Station to the Sarda Railway Station in the district. - BSS
