Country's first ICT incubator to starts work in Sept


Country's first ICT incubator in Kawranbazar, with 70,000 square feet office space, high speed Internet links and other necessary gadgets, is likely to start work in the next month. Scores of skilled programmers of over 100 software and IT-enabled services organisation will engage their talents, ingenuity and analytic abilities. Official sources said Science, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan at a meeting on July 24 appealed to the concerned authorities to ensure conversion of BSRS Bhaban into an ICT incubator. Prime Minister Khaleda Zia presided over that meeting. This new ICT establishment will be totally free from power disruption as it is equipped with standby generator. He said BASIS has e-mailed all its members to use this new facility. The new ICT establishment will be equipped with `Video Conferencing' facility and high speed Internet connection for accommodating local and foreign export-oriented software and ICT professionals. -BSS

ADB assistance for central depository system


The Asian Development Bank (ADB) Friday approved an equity investment of 526,000 US dollar to a new local computerising firm for its project on automated depository system in Bangladesh. Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL), a new company, has initiated US$ 5.26 million project to automate depository system in the country. The central depository system, an electronic book system, will record the title and transfer of securities ownership. The central depository system will help bourses modernise securities transaction process and pave the way for further development of the capital market. This would help restore the confidence of the local and foreign investors towards the capital market and thus would contribute to economic growth by improving fund mobilisation, ADB investment officer Peter Marco said. Other investors included local and foreign banks, bourses in Dhaka and Chittagong and other financial institutions. - BSS

Bangladesh to publish Encyclopedia on Jan 3


Bangladesh for the first time will publish the national Encyclopedia, both in Bengali and English, early next year. Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (ASB), the pioneer research organisation of the country, will hold the publication ceremony of the 10-volume reference book "Banglapedia" on January 3 next year to mark the golden jubilee of the society. The publication work of the 11,000-page book with write-ups from 1300 writers and researchers from home and abroad is now going on in four printing presses simultaneously to enrich the history of publications in Bangladesh, an official handout said in the city Thursday. A total of 10,000 sets, 5,000 each in Bengali and English, will be published on quality white papers imported from South Korea. The books included more than 800 maps and 3,000 pictures and graphics, and these would be decorated with quality cover-pages by efficient binders. - BSS

Direct N region train service resumes today


The direct train service between Dhaka and northern region of the country will be restored today (Friday) as the flood affected rail tracks have been repaired on an urgent basis and a trial run was already completed on the tracks Wednesday. The direct train service remained snapped since July 27 when Balashi Ferry Ghat and a major section of the rail lines were washed away by floodwaters. Soil under about eight kilometres of rail track between Balashi ghat and Trimohonee was washed away and five railway bridges were seriously affected during the flood. The authorities took emergency steps to repair the rail lines after the recession of floodwaters, a railway press release said Friday. The Dhaka-bound Teesta Express from Dinajpur will cross the repaired rail lines as the first passenger train. -BSS

Two people killed in city incidents


Two people were killed in separate incidents in the capital during 12 hours ending at 5pm Thursday. Police quoting witnesses said Abdur Razzak (22), a lift- man of Alhaj Mansion in Motijeel Commercial Area was killed in a road accident when a bus (Dhaka Metro Ja- 11-1237), running from Shapla Chhattar knocked him down as he was crossing the road in front of his office building at about 9.45 in the morning. He was severely injured and succumbed to his injury on way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Local people caught the driver of the vehicle and handed him over to Motijeel police. Police also seized the vehicle. In another incident, Masum (18), a worker of a brace factory, at Uttar Jatra Bari, Dhal Pur under Demra police station, was electrocuted when he came in touch with a live wire at about 1.30pm. After the incident, his colleagues rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where attending doctors declared him dead. The victim was identified as the son of one Shamsul Haq of the same area. Two cases were lodged with respective police stations. - BSS

Autopsy report of Bappi submitted


NARAYANGANJ, Aug 15: Rubayed Ahmed Bappi has been strangulated to death and his left leg was severed before throwing into the river, said the autopsy report submitted to the authority Thursday. A three-member medical team headed by Dr Joytindra Chandra Mondal, resident physician of Narayanganj General Hospital, that done the autopsy found clots of blood in the throat and lunge of the body. A student of Armanitola school in Dhaka, seven-year old Bappi was kidnapped from near his house at Becharam Dewri in Dhaka on August 5, in an attempt to realise ransom from his father. He was killed and thrown into Sitalakhya river the same night. The body of Bappi was found floating at Kutubpur Kheyaghat of Sonargaon Upazila. Police recovered the body Wednesday. The alleged killers have been arrested. -UNB

Country's highest temperature 33.2 degree Celsius was recorded Thursday at Srimongal and the lowest 24.5 degree Celsius at Dhaka and Srimongal. The sun sets in the capital today at 6:31 pm and rises Saturday at 5:34 am.
